Carter swam as fast as he could. “What the Hell was that?” he asked as Paul helped him out of the water.
“Hell knows, but I think we should get out of here.”
In a panic they pulled their clothing on, their eyes scouring the darkened skies and the trees for whatever it was that had made such a bone-chilling sound. Socks went on inside out and feet were shoved into shoes with laces undone.
“Grab your coat,” called Paul as they ran into the safety of the trees.
A second shriek was followed by yet another. It seemed to come from directly above them. Both men searched the canopy, scanning the shadows and boughs until their gazes came to rest on something large and black that seemed to slide off the tree and drop,freefalling towards them with incredible speed.
Carter felt his heart jump into his mouth.
