“Ready?” he asked.
“Ready.” Alyce lifted a hand to knock, but the door opened before she got the chance.
“Oh, I thought I heard someone out here. Is everything all right?” Kelly asked as she stepped out from behind the screen door.
“Yes, we’re fine.” Alyce felt like an idiot. Almost like a beggar who’d come back for something she wasn’t sure she should be accepting.
“You were right, Kelly. All the rooms were taken at the Motor Inn. We even tried a few other motels, but nothing. It must be a busy time of the year,” Ross said with an apologetic smile.
“There’s always something going on around here. Now tell me, does this mean you’ve accepted my offer?” she asked with a pleasant smile that gave Alyce the creeps.
